This 31 Day Grand African Expedition explores some of Africa’s most beautiful locations, from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg to Victoria Falls, Nairobi and Swaziland.

This 31 Day Grand African Expedition begins in Cape Town where you will enjoy a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain to witness its incredible views and then visit Boulders Beach, home to the protected land-based colony of African penguins. From Cape Town, you will travel along Route 62 via Montague and the Klein Karoo to Oudtshoorn, before continuing to Knysna and Durban, and visiting the World Heritage-listed Featherbed Nature Reserve and Storm’s River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park.

Next you will journey through the Dolphin Coast and enter the heart of Zululand, known for its warm climate and sandy beaches. You will visit Shakaland, a unique re-creation of a Zulu village where the Village Chief will host a private tour and introduce you to traditional Zulu life. It is then onto Ghost Mountain and the world-acclaimed Operation Rhino, a program that successfully captures and relocates white rhinos to sanctuaries within South Africa and abroad. As you continue your travels, you will stop for a cruise on Lake Jozini before continuing through Big Bend to the Ezulwini Valley in Swaziland.

Your journey continues to Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest national park, for a game drive on an open Land Rover. You will then continue onto Johannesburg, travelling along the popular Panorama Route to witness the stunning Blyde River Canyon, one of Africa’s natural treasures. Next, fly to Livingstone and witness the powerful and majestic Victoria Falls at close range, before enjoying a day trip to Chobe National Park for a game drive along the Chobe River. You will then visit Amboseli National Park, located beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, for a game drive through the savannah, witnessing elephants, birds and other wildlife.

Your tour continues through Shaba and Samburu National Park, Sweetwaters Game Reserve and Lake Nakuru National Park before ending in Masai Mara National Reserve for a once-in-a-lifetime event, witnessing the greatest wildlife spectacle, the Great Migration (seasonal).

Day 1: Cape Town
Welcome to the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town (flight not included). On arrival at Cape Town airport you will be met by your Scenic Tours representative and transferred* to your hotel. The remainder of the day and evening are at leisure. Tonight, meet your Tour Director for a welcome briefing.

Day 2: Cape Town (FB,D)
This morning enjoy your Included city tour of Cape Town. Take a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain for outstanding views (weather permitting). The floor of the cable car rotates 360 degrees ensuring that everyone gets a view of the beautiful city and surrounds. Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE choose from: (1) a tour of Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned during the apartheid years; or (2) a half day tour of the beautiful wineland region outside Cape Town; or (3) a township tour for an insight into the multicultural side of Cape Town; or (4) an afternoon whale watching cruise (seasonal from July to September). Day 3: Cape Town (FB,L)
Today is your Included discovery of the most south-westerly point in Africa, Cape Peninsula. Enjoy spectacular views of the Cape of Good Hope from the summit of Cape Point, where the peninsula juts into the sea. Continue exploring the Cape before enjoying an Included lunch in a local restaurant. This afternoon you will visit Boulders Beach, home to the protected land-based colony of African penguins.
Day 4: Cape Town - Oudtshoorn (FB,HD)
Farewell memorable Cape Town and journey along Route 62 via the charming town of Montagu and the ‘Klein Karoo’ to Oudtshoorn, known as the ‘feather capital of the world’ due to its perfect environment for raising ostriches. Included is your tour of the world famous Cango Caves, where the underground chambers are filled with breathtaking limestone formations such as the ‘organ pipes’, ‘Cleopatra’s needle’ and the ‘kneeling camel’ – prepare to be amazed! Included this morning is your visit to an ostrich farm to learn about every aspect of these intriguing birds from breeding to rearing. Continue onto the beautiful Garden Route to Plettenburg Bay for your Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE choose from: (1) a guided tour of Monkeyland, the world’s only free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary; or (2) a visit the spectacular Birds of Eden Sanctuary to discover a vast array of native birdlife. Explore Knysna this morning at leisure before enjoying an Included visit to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, a World Heritage listed site. A short ferry ride across the lagoon is followed by a trip by Unimog drawn trailer to the top of the reserve. Enjoy the panoramic views at a scenic lookout whilst specialist guides share their knowledge of the local folklore. Once back in the Food Forest, a unique outdoor restaurant is situated under the Milkwood Trees, where you will enjoy an Included spectacular buffet lunch. This afternoon return by ferry to Knysna and enjoy free time to explore the Waterfront area.
Day 7: Knysna - Durban (FB,D)
This morning enjoy a visit to Storm’s River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park. Continue to Port Elizabeth this afternoon and board your flight to Durban (flight not included).

Day 8: Durban - Ghost Mountain (FB,D)
Travel through the Dolphin Coast region amongst a sea of sugar cane fields to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, an unspoilt wilderness of rolling hills, subtropical forest, acacia woodland and palm fringed rivers. World renowned for its rhino conservation program, The Hluhluwe and Umfolozi Reserves are the oldest such havens in Africa, being founded in 1895. It was here that the world-acclaimed Operation Rhino was introduced during the 1960’s, successfully capturing and relocating white rhino to sanctuaries within South Africa and abroad. Recently, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi has focused its efforts on saving the endangered black rhino, whose numbers in Africa have dwindled in the past decade. Later continue to our accommodation situated at the foot of Ghost Mountain in Northern Kwazulu Natal. Included SCENIC ENRICH this evening enjoy a mesmerising display of traditional dancing.

Day 10: Ghost Mountain - Swaziland (FB,D)
This morning relax and enjoy breath taking scenery as your journey continues across the mighty Lusutfu River en route to the tiny Kingdom of Swaziland. Travel through the rolling hills and magnificent valleys of Big Bend before arriving at your hotel, set in the natural tranquillity of the Ezulwini Valley.

Day 11: Swaziland - Kruger National Park (FB,D)
Your journey continues as you travel to Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest national park. A real treat awaits as you arrive at Tinga & Narina Private Game Lodge, situated on a private concession within Kruger National Park. The Sabie River flows through it, and it has the highest recorded concentration of leopards in Africa. Included this afternoon, enjoy a game drive in an open 4x4 safari vehicle. This evening savour the surrounding African bush land whilst dining at the lodge.

Day 12: Kruger National Park (FB,L,HD)
Today you will explore this amazing and famous National Park as you embark on Included morning and evening game drives. Limitless game viewing is possible as your open Land Rover is able to traverse the entire Kruger National Park without restriction, even off road to track the ‘Big Five’. Today, journey the world renowned ‘Panorama Route’ and view the stunning Blyde River Canyon, one of Africa’s natural treasures. Included is your visit to Bourke’s Luck Potholes and a stop at God’s Window for breathtaking views. Arrive in Johannesburg late afternoon and this evening is at leisure.

Day 14: Johannesburg - Livingstone (FB,HD)
Depart the hotel this morning for your transfer to the airport to meet your flight (flight not included) to Livingstone, Zambia. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel, set on the banks of the magnificent Zambezi River. This afternoon see the powerful and majestic falls at close range during your Included tour of the Zambian side of one of the seven Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls. Tonight climb aboard the historic Livingstone Express steam train for an Included traverse of Mosi-oa-Tunya Game Park, accompanied by a five course meal on board while the sun sets.

Day 15: Chobe National Park (FB,L)
Included today is a day trip to Chobe National Park in neighbouring Botswana. On arrival there is an included cruise on the Chobe River, home to the largest concentration of elephants in Africa, as well as buffalo, hippo and teaming birdlife. Lunch is Included before an afternoon game drive along the Chobe River banks.
Day 16: Livingstone (FB)
Today enjoy your Included SCENIC ENRICH visit to a local village to gain an appreciation of traditional tribal life. You will also explore the quaint town of Livingstone which is rich in scenery and heritage, and visit the Livingstone Museum. This afternoon explore this historic town further at your own pace or simply relax and enjoy the facilities of your luxury hotel before boarding your vessel for an Included sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. Enjoy sundowners as you absorb this stunning setting from a most unique vantage point.

This morning, leave the bustling city behind and head south to Amboseli National Park, located beneath the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. Late this afternoon, experience an Included game drive through this national reserve with its wide, dry plains and massive herds of elephants which migrate past the lodge every day.

The snow clad peak of Mount Kilimanjaro soars above you as you enjoy an Included game drive through the savannah and acacia scrub of Amboseli National Park. Heading deep into the park you will encounter large concentrations of elephants, birdlife and other wildlife. This afternoon Included SCENIC ENRICH visit to a traditional Maasai Village where you will learn first hand about this complex culture. The Maasai are a truly independent and proud people and have one of the most famous traditional cultures on earth. Day 21: Amboseli - Aberdare National Park (FB,L,D)
Nairobi’s famous Safari Park is your Included lunch destination today, followed by a drive to Mount Kenya National Park, home to the imposing, extinct volcano, Mount Kenya which dominates the landscape of the Kenyan Highlands. This World Heritage listed National Park includes a variety of habitats ranging from higher forest, bamboo, alpine moorlands, glaciers, tarns and glacial moraines. This evening enjoy Included game viewing from the comfort of your lodge which overlooks a waterhole and salt lick that attracts numerous herds of elephant and buffalo.

Day 22: Aberdare National Park - Shaba National Reserve (FB,L,D)
Continuing north, arrive at Shaba National Reserve which lies adjacent to Samburu National Reserve. Popularly known as the “Samburu Ecosystem”, these reserves sustain a variety of free ranging wildlife species. On arrival enjoy an Included afternoon game drive.

Day 23: Shaba & Samburu National Reserves (FB,L,D)
This morning rise early for your Included game drive viewing in Samburu National Reserve, with its striking backdrop of the Mathews Range. The diverse wildlife that can be found in this area include reticulated giraffe, elephant, waterbuck, gazelle, buffalo and the rare Grevy’s zebra. This afternoon enjoy an Included game drive for the chance to see strangely adapted Gerenuk and Orix.
Day 24: Shaba National Reserve - Mt Kenya & Sweetwaters Game Reserve (FB,L,D)
Today, journey towards the Equator between snowcapped Mount Kenya and the foothills of the Aberdare Mountains to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent species can be seen. The aim of the project was to set up a safe, secure and permanent refuge colony where orphaned and isolated chimps could be introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area as natural as possible. Later, we arrive at Fairmont Mt Kenya Safari Club. After lunch, join Maasai tribesman and celebrate with an Equator Crossing Ceremony including a certificate of achievement.

Day 25: Mt Kenya - Lake Nakuru National Park (FB,L,D)
Today enjoy your Included game drive enroute to the Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, which is nestled along the Lion Hill overlooking the spectacular flamingo pink rimmed Lake Nakuru. Its location affords panoramic vistas of the lake and Lake Nakuru National Park, set in a picturesque landscape of surrounding woodland and grassland and home to large flocks of pelicans, pink flamingos, and other wildlife.

Day 26: Lake Nakuru National Park (FB,L,D)
This morning is your Included SCENIC ENRICH visit to the Nakuru Baby Orphanage Centre, established by an Australian family who have sold their home to care for the local children and the surrounding community. Enjoy lunch with the children for a memorable experience. Later, an afternoon game drive in an area teaming with wildlife, then there is an Included SCENIC ENRICH opportunity to plant a tree to help regenerate the forested landscape.
Day 27: Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara National Reserve (FB,L,D)
Continue to Masai Mara National Reserve, where a once in a lifetime experience awaits as you witness the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth – the Great Migration (seasonal). It has been recorded that the Masai Mara attracts 95 species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles and over 400 bird species, during the annual migration over 1.5 million wildebeest. This afternoon enjoy an Included game drive through the Masai Mara which is regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife viewing areas, the pinnacle being the hazardous Mara River.

Day 28: Masai Mara National Reserve (FB,L,D)
Enjoy Included game drives through the Masai Mara which is situated in the Great Rift Valley in primarily open grasslands and home to the largest population of lions in Kenya. Vast herds of zebra, impala, antelope, gazelle and giraffe grace the landscape, hippos populate the streams and lakes, and the woodlands and savannah are home to leopard, lion, hyena and cheetah. During the short flight, take in the spectacular views over the landscape below. On arrival in Nairobi connect with your flight (flight not included, please book to depart after 4pm) to Johannesburg. On arrival in Johannesburg you will be transferred to your hotel located in the lively shopping district of Sandton.
