Departing from Vancouver you will fly to Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, where you will marvel at the views of Discovery Passage, Quadra Island and the Coast Mountain Range. Next, take a floatplane to Glendale Cove, Knight Inlet, home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly bears in British Columbia. You will venture up the estuary in search of bears and other wildlife and enjoy lunch at the intimate Knight Inlet Lodge, a charming floating lodge nestled against a waterfall-lined cliff.
A bear viewing tour and Knight Inlet sightseeing cruise follow providing the chance to witness seals, sea lions and porpoises. A guided walk of the beautiful Kwalate River Valley provides an excellent opportunity to experience the magic of a temperate old growth rainforest ecosystem and you can take a tour to view the bears by sea kayak or boat before returning to Vancouver via Campbell River. This short four day tour can be added to your existing tour or taken independently.
In the wild and pristine region of Western Canada’s Pacific Northwest, a select few travellers are afforded the incomparable thrill of close encounters with some of North America’s most impressive creatures – massive Grizzly Bears, soaring Bald Eagles and large pods of Orca Whales.
Each autumn, in an untouched area known as Knight Inlet, 150 nautical miles northwest of Vancouver, millions of salmon make their return to the rivers of their birth. In what is surely one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles, the spawning salmon turn crystal clear waters dark as they vie for a spot to lay their eggs in the river’s sandy bottom.
The end of the salmon life cycle sparks the beginning of another ancient rhythm: the return to the rivers of Ursus Arctos Horribilis – the North American Grizzly Bear. Attracted by the tumult of the salmon, dozens of giant grizzlies gather at the spawning channels to gorge on the fish as they stack up in the river. A nature trip to this special region is surely among the world’s unique wildlife experiences as it is rare indeed that such wildlife as Grizzlies, Eagles and Orcas collect in one accessible area. This is an independent tour, not escorted by a Scenic Tours Tour Director.
